Hampton Roads: National Center for Modeling and Simulation

Modeling and simulation in Hampton Roads has grown into a $400 million plus annual industry employing over 4,000. Over 1 million square feet of new private sector office space has recently been developed in the Interstate-664 corridor. The U.S. Joint Forces Command (USJFCOM), which specializes in computer modeling and simulation and experimentation for the military, occupies over 650,000 square feet of office space in this submarket and has been a magnet for the nation’s largest defense contractors.

What the new MAST Center means to Hampton Roads

Old Dominion University (ODU) recently announced that the Virginia Modeling, Analysis and Simulation Center (VMASC) will relocate into a new 60,000-square-foot office building in the new, 32-acre MAST Center at Hampton Roads Crossing (Modeling Analysis Simulation Technology) being developed within the cities of Suffolk and Portsmouth. The nonprofit VMASC is home to more than 100 masters and doctoral students. Researchers at VMASC will use computer technology to simulate real life scenarios such as military training, medical training, or transportation analysis, for example, for use in long and short-range training and planning efforts. The planned ODU Tri-Cities Higher Education Center state-of-the art facility at the MAST Center will support a variety of graduate and undergraduate courses and programs. The MAST Center will further establish the region as the nexus for sophisticated simulations and computer exercises for both military and commercial applications.
